Sheet Metal Negotiations Update – May 27, 2022

NOTICE TO ALL MEMBERS IN ICI SHEET METAL

SCHEDULING STRIKE VOTES FOR SHEET METAL

May 27, 2022 Mississauga, ON – Your Negotiating Committee met with the Sheet Metal Contractors’ Association on Wednesday May 25, 2022.  Monetary proposals were exchanged between your Negotiating Committee and the Contractors’ Association. These negotiations broke off late in the day on May 25 when the Contractors’ Association informed us that it was not authorized to continue bargaining.  The Negotiating Committee requested that bargaining be rescheduled to continue as soon as possible to get a settlement that our members would ratify.

The Contractors’ Association refused to meet with the designated Ministry of Labour Conciliation Officer until Monday May 30.  Further, they will not be able to respond to offers for settlement until at least June 1, 2022.  As of now there are no dates scheduled for further negotiations.

The Contractors’ Current Offer

The Contractors’ Association has refused to make any final agreement retroactive to May 1, 2022.  In addition, the Contractors’ Association is unwilling to match the monetary increases across the province in comparable trades.  By failing to match provincial averages for comparable trades and refusing to make proposed increases retroactive to May 1, 2022, the Negotiating Committee is not prepared to recommend the Contractors’ current offer.

As of now the Contractors’ are offering the following upon ratification:

For Local Unions 235, 269, 397, 473, 504, 537 and 562 – $8.00

For Local Union 47 – $8.50

For Local Union 30 – $8.95

To be clear this Monetary Offer without retroactive is only marginally better than the offer our members have already rejected.

Members working under the Sheet Metal ICI Collective Agreement from across Ontario voted by a wide margin to reject the Tentative Agreement.  In doing so the members have sent a clear message to the Negotiating Committee and the Contractors’ Association that the Tentative Agreement was simply insufficient to address the dramatic increases to our members’ cost of living.  The current offer from the Contractors’ Association does not meet the needs of our members.

Your Local Union is scheduling Strike Votes for the week of May 30 – June 4, 2022.

We need every member working in ICI Sheet Metal to vote for strike action to get a fair deal that keeps us level with comparable trades.

Please look to your local union’s websites and social media pages for the specific information on time and location of strike votes.

Please return to this webpage or your Local’s website and/or social media for all future updates.

In Solidarity,

Sheet Metal Negotiating Committee.
